Male Portrait Touch Up

I’m often asked how much touching-up do I perform on my male candid portraits. My answer is, “not much…unless the client wants an enlargement: 8x10 or larger". Basically, I minimize distractions caused or enhanced by digital technology, correct lighting imperfections, correct for color and contrast, some softening if needed and that’s about it. Compare these two male portraits. Interested in your feedback.

Wedding Slideshow

Have you heard the good news?

Jamie and Rodger Beaumont were married Sunday, December 20th at the Oak Harbor Elks Club. Friends and family rejoiced until late in the night. Their moss and champagne color themes were enhanced by the talented folks at Distinctive Designs Florist. Combined with the expertise of the Elks’ staff, the staging area was transformed into a romantic high-key forest wonderland. I’m envious…wishing I had half their talent and expertise. I am so glad they are on my team.

Last Minute Christmas Portrait

Finally getting my work-flow down to an efficient art. I was able to capture a range of portraits, assist client in making a selection, touch-up, and produce a print in less than forty-five minutes! End result…client walked away with a surprise Christmas portrait in hand.

Familiarity

Familiarity has it's benefits. I've photographed these darling little ladies many times. They know all the posing ques and quickly snap into intimate or dynamic poses. I know...there are pros and cons. But grandpa was able to get some top of the line portraits of his little lambs and be back home in less than 30 minutes. Smart man...in these recessionary times it pays to shop local.

Riding the Rail!

Saturday was spent with the family at the Lake Whatcom Railway cruising the rails, visiting with Santa and singing Christmas carols. The boys even spent some time fussing over lapping sitting privileges with Santa. It’s good to have a day off once in a blue moon.

Teddy Bear Breakfast-2009

The company and breakfast were great! On location shooting has it's challenges but all-in-all things went well. I need some feedback. This is a I will do again event! Thanks Lyn for the invite.

Black & White for Newspaper

...and I almost forgot...we need a B&W for the newspaper. I've learned never to send a color image to the paper (unless it's for a color spread) because they convert a color into to a gray-scale instead of a true B&W.

Engagement Session at Rosario Beach on Whidbey Island

What a pleasant break from back-to-back SENIOR Portraits! I'm especially grateful for a break in the weather. This early darkness and shifting weather patterns is starting break my groove. Anyway… we had enough sun and shine and joy to complete Lacie & Harrison’s engagement session. We all walked away a little chilled but confident we captured the look we were after. Burr…

Bon Voyage Whidbey

Had an interesting despite the weather type day. Yes, despite a chilly gray rainy sunless day, I managed to capture an engaging session…despite all. I’ m especially grateful for Bill & Linda’s enduring patients.

Before moving to Whidbey Island I thought gray days were the standard. After a few years I discovered they can be an exception especially during the summer.

The lovely couple is moving to the southwest where there’s almost a guarantee of hot but predictable weather patterns. Bon Voyage lovebirds! Best wishes casting thou nest ayont.

In Celebration of Chong McCarthy

The early afternoon was spent celebrating Chong McCarthy’s art showing at Deception Pass Visitor Center. Chong’s community of friends and family are extremely supportive of her and her work. Even though I wanted to stay for internationally famous Kimchee and Bulgogi at Deception Pass Park, I had to press on to another engagement. An unfortunate loss for me. My dear mother would pinch me for a sanity check. I read on Chong’s Facebook account that this was also a birthday celebration. Happy 29th birthday 2 U!

Whidbey Island Farm Tour

No doubt the chill of Fall is upon us but fortunately the sun was shinny and winds minimal both Saturday and Sunday. In support of Whidbey Island Farm Tour, four members of the Whidbey Island Camera Club setup a display canopy at Horses Tales Nursery in Oak Harbor.

Sales were sleepy creepy slow but we had an opportunity to small talk about the latest electronic gadgetry, family and to connect with other vendors. Seeing many visitors with the new Nikon D5000 and D40 aroused our teacher instincts. We had an in service on fill flash and micro-photography.

Two members, including me, received a lesson on oriental artichokes. I know it’s not a big deal but I always thought artichokes grew in Safeway.

Happy Whidbey Island Farm Tour Day! Oh yeah, careful of ducks crossing.

“…can I bring a friend?”

The question always arises, “…can I bring a friend?” Of course the standard answer is “yes, of course.” Once the stomach butterflies flutter heavenly and things start to roll there’s no longer a need for companionship.

Fall Colors Amongst Us

Friends, Fall Colors are upon us. Yesterday, I ventured out with my favorite models to survey the early Fall Colors. While not so willing the promise of ice cream was a strong encourager.

Subjects were backlit so I added a splash of fill flash. Of course the best shots resulted from having the flash off the camera which can prove challenging with fast paced little ones.

I’m starting to enjoy taking time from my business grind to do something new or interesting. Yesterday I went to the see a PBY CATALINA land at SEAPLANE BASE, OAK HARBOR, WASHINGTON.

Being a people photographer I quickly focused on the visitors. An assortment of onlookers gathered: fussy toddlers without naps and seasoned vets limping on crutches all gathered to celebrate the landing of a PBY Catalina at the Seaplane Base. Then I noticed an interesting trend…the cameras! Cell phones, videos with still frames, point and shoots in video modes, wind & click disposables, iPhones with instant uploading. Amateurs and working pros alike worked shoulder to shoulder to capture a piece of aviation history. The air buzzed with simulated shutter clicks only to be silenced by the sputter and eventual roar of the Catalina’s duel engines.
“Digital recording gadgets have changed the face of photography”, I thought. Like the Catalina perhaps my bag of once precious camera equipment have become historical artifacts.

Hi Key Adventure

I'm perfecting my Hi-Key adventure. Occasionally, I get a Hi-Key request but not enough to stay in practice. Now I have the lighting, etc. down to a demonstrable standard. Thanks Mike for being a willing model.

Why are these people leaping for joy? Because we did it! What is “IT” that we did? All eyes open, everybody sported a smile and we had Gerry on the road to Portland by 7 p.m. … only minutes before the sun dropped below the horizon. Thanks to the cooperation and skilled planning by the Brooks/Foppe team, environmental portraiture in Mariners Cove was elevated to a new standard.

Faithful Over a few Things

Wednesday’s session challenged all to be more faithful and patient. The wind was windy, a neighbor was falling trees, the rain came and went and came again. Finally in the midst of havoc there came a peace! The sun and white fluffy clouds popped out. We had beautiful rim lighting. I added a pinch of fill-flash and bingo we had embraceable images.

There’s an old adage: If you don’t like Whidbey weather…wait a while… it’ll get better.

Family Holiday Cards

NOW is the time to think about family holiday cards. Let me tell you why. You definitely want to avoid the last minute rush, allow for shipping, coordination of family schedule...you know the drill! If you’re planning an environmental session, the weather is now in your favor. Most of my cards layouts are custom made verses tweaked templates…this takes time. Let’s connect now before the rush. www.pendletonimaging.com

Becky and Scotty Carlson's wedding at the Ol' Hometead

Jacob and Sarah Ebey's homestead, in Coupeville Wa, was a wonderful place to jump-start Becky and Scotty Carlson's Sunday wedding. Many Japanese students were gathered to witness the unfolding of a glorious occasion. Big fun & excitement was had by all.

Deception Pass Park

Early afternoon was spent in Deception Pass State Park watching the fog engulf and release the bridge. While I didn't get any classic shots, Josh and I had fun talking and watching the boats roll in. Poetic experience!

Martinez Wedding

Jenny & Anthony Martinez were wed yesterday at Living Word Church in Oak Harbor. They celebrated their reception at the O’Club on NAS, Whidbey. DJ Moose rocked the house as usually challenging the arthritic, cripple and shy to hit the floor dancing. Seriously, there wasn’t an empty spot on the dance floor. Even my ol’ bones shook a grove! There must have been a million single pretty gals but only one lucky one.

Anthony’s frat brothers were loose and creating havoc. They were promptly rechained and given verbal threats. Nothing new there. Can’t take them nowhere.

If you missed this event, you're simply not surrounded by the right circle of friends!

Deception Pass Boat Tour

Okay I’m often accused of not having a life outside my business model so yesterday evening I took a slight detour. As part of Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours, Deception Pass Tours offered an oyster barbecue and Deception Pass Bridge boat tour. I shut down shop early at the Oak Harbor Public Market and took flight to board the 5:30 departure.

The weather was great but the ride a bit rougher than normal. A lot of sea spray and rough water which was exacerbated by a flat bottom boat. This was not a digital camera friendly ride. My advice is to take at least a couple of tours to get the gist of the waterways and be prepared for adverse conditions. Deception Pass is not a water park ride. On Tuesday’s tour the waters were glass smooth. Northwest Dolphin cycled at the helm or bobbed on the horizon. Water fowl was abundant and surfacing Harbor Seals were almost at arm’s length.

The barbecued oysters, a first for me, were exquisite! What-A-go Deception Pass Tours and Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours! You’ll get my business every time.

You can talk about the weather but…

My beloved great-grandmother used to say we can talk about the weather but we can’t do anything about it. That may be true but we can step in from the rain or prepare accordingly. Approximately three years ago the summer weather on Whidbey drastically shifted to drab and cancellations, no-shows or reschedules became the expectation. I foresaw an unfortunate pattern lurking on the horizon for environmental photography and quickly moved to meet this business shift. During the Fall I invested time and finances to restructuring my studio and for the next few years studio portraiture became the standard. Life went on but my average sale consisted of an occasional 11x14 but mostly 8x10s and smaller. Then an early summer of 2009 hit Whidbey Island.

Early 2009 I displayed oversize canvass of families taken at local landmarks and the request for canvas mounted portraits quickly became the standard. Leary of previous weather patterns many brides planned indoor wedding portraits but gladly stepped outdoors to accommodate Whidbey’s best. They were of course amazed by the quality of the sessions. The bridal party easily became more animated and less posing and stage directions were required. The groom even smiled when snuggled next to the well meaning mother-in-law.

There’s a certain natural joy and spontaneity of expression found in environmental portraiture that can’t be faked during studio sessions. It erupts quickly and begs to be captured. My job becomes easy: I adjust for lighting, tweak head angles and let natural expressions unfold.

While I still offer studio sessions and smaller images, by far canvas enlargements have become the new standard for Pendleton Imaging & Photography. My beloved great-grandmother also said to THINK BIG but that's another blog entry.

Lavender Wind Farm Festival

This weekend I'm operating out of the Lavender Wind Farm Festival. I'm doing portraits midst the scenic flowing fields of lavender. Forgot to mention, I'm also giving away a FREE FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION. For a great day of relaxed family fun plan to visit us. There's ZERO RAIN in the forecast. Exciting!
